Using Two Tools: Linking SeaSketch with the InVEST habitat risk assessment in the Galapagos archipelago

2016 is turning out to be a big year for marine sanctuaries. Currently only about 3 percent of the world’s oceans are protected. President Obama just nudged the percentage up a little with the recent decision to expand the Papahānaumokuākea marine sanctuary in Hawai’i.  But earlier this year, Ecuador had its own historic moment, when the president announced a new marine sanctuary around the Galapagos islands.

The McClintock Lab sent lab member Grace Goldberg to San Juan, PR to speak about implementing marine spatial planning (MSP) using novel tools as part of the Caribbean Coastal-Marine EBM Tools Workshop Training, put on by the EBM Tools Network and NatureServe. She spoke about MSP process, from prioritizing objectives, to data gathering, to iterative design - emphasizing the role of a wide range of tools that provide a scientific underpinning for planning, and tools that enable effective stakeholder engagement, highlighting key resources for the participants.
